In March of 2022, the Tej Kohli and Ruit Foundation, alongside the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology staged a cataract microsurgical workshop in Doramba, Nepal.

This camp turned out to become one of the biggest outreach camps held. 333 patients, all suffering from curable blindness returned home with restored sight thanks to the intervention of the Tej Kohli and Ruit Foundation.

The microsurgical camp was held on the 18th, 19th and 20th of March with preparations for the ‘mega camp’ beginning a month before. The Tej Kohli and Ruit Foundation dispatched a medical team to screen patients from every corner of the Doramba. This led to a grand total of 16 screening camps across the district with 3,251 patients screened leading to 333 patients being invited for free cataract surgery.

On the final day of the camp, co-founders Dr Ruit and Mr Kohli both removed the bandages from all of the 333 patients. One patient, Krishna Bahadur Majhi was thrilled to be able to see again. Overwhelmed at his new vision, he observed that his wife had lost a lot of weight and told the team:

“The toll of taking care of me, and our financial stress must have caused her to lose weight.”

Three months later

After Krishna of Sindhupalchowk had undergone a life-transforming cataract surgery in March, 2022 at the Doramba Camp, he has began to live a new, improved life.

Three months after his operation, he is free from dependency and actively participates in the household work. He has began to enjoy feeding the goats and the chicken and helping his wife Rita in the kitchen.

Although he has started to live and enjoy life, Krishna also suffers from high blood sugar. This means that he hasn’t been able to actively seek employment. However, he often walks around his village, socialising and picks up occasional jobs such as carpentry and masonry. This odd jobs earn him a small income, enough to support his family.

The intervention of the Tej Kohli and Ruit Foundation has encouraged Krishna to have a new respect and love for life. The goal has always been to reduce poverty and improve quality of life by curing blindness which has been achieved here.

The Tej Kohli & Ruit Foundation was founded in March 2021 by London philanthropist Tej Kolhi and Kathmandu ‘God of Sight’ Dr Sanduk Ruit. As of November 2022 the NGO had screened 170,022 patients and cured 22,663of blindness at 91 outreach camps in Nepal, Bhutan and Ghana. The Tej Kohli & Ruit Foundation is a restricted fund operating under the auspices of Prism The Gift Fund, registered UK charity number 1099682. The Foundation targets the #1 United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of reducing poverty by making large-scale surgical interventions to cure blindness at the grassroots in the developing world. All treatments are provided completely free, with 100% of the funding coming from Tej Kohli and the Kohli family.
