Revisiting Patients
Since starting our mission in March 2021 the Tej Kohli & Ruit Foundation have cured over 30,000 people in Nepal, Bhutan and Ghana. Throughout our journey, we have revisited several patients to see how their lives have been changed.
Shri Mani Rai
One of the patients we saw again was Shri Mani Rai. Shri Mani Rai of Solukhumbu District had been living with crippling cataract blindness for three years. After spending her time in darkness she was cured by the Tej Kohli and Ruit Foundation in collaboration with the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology in April, 2021.
Over the last two years, she has been able to grow and harvest vegetables in her farm to sell them at the local market every Wednesday and Saturday. This is a clear example of how the cure of cataract blindness can improve an individuals and communities economic productivity.
Krishna Majhi
Another patient from early in our journey is Krishna Majhi. He resides in Sindhupalchowk District and had to forfeit his job due to cataract blindness. During the Tej Kohli & Ruit Foundation’s ‘mega-camp’ in Doramba, he was cured.
Moments after his patches were removed, Krishna Majhi became a transformed person — and was elated to receive a second chance to sight.
Belmati Damai
Belmati Damai of Bajhang District was highly dependent on her husband for basic everyday tasks. She was cured of cataract blindness at a Tej Kohli & Ruit Foundation outreach camp in Bajhang, which was organised in collaboration with Geta Eye Hospital, Dhangadi. The next day, she was overjoyed to see again — her husband shared her excitement.
Belmati and her husband have since returned home, and today live a life free from needless blindness and able to enjoy their life together.
Jun Maya Gurung
Every year Jun Maya Gurung looked forward to the spring-time in Manang District of Nepal. She would work hard in the fields to gather enough harvest, sometimes enough to last her a year.
Unfortunately, Jun Maya began to suffer from cataracts. She was now unable to harvest her crops meaning that she had began to lose food and an income.
Jun Maya was cured in May, 2022, and this spring, she can be seen back in the fields harvesting crops.
These are just some examples of the lives changed by intervention in developing communities. The Tej Kohli & Ruit Foundation plan to keep moving forward and restoring the sight of thousands more.
